There are many sources of funding for postgraduate law studies at Oxford.

Law Faculty awards (for study at any college)

Prospective applicants are asked to note that for Faculty scholarships (but not college or university awards, for which separate applications must be made) there is one application form common to all the studentships listed below; and if you complete and return that form with the relevant supporting material, you will be considered for all the awards for which you are eligible (so you won't need to complete a separate application for each of the studentships for which you wish to be considered).

bulletCommercial Bar Studentships: awarded annually to those embarking on a one-year research degree. Primarily intended for MPhil students, though those intending to take the MSt, or embarking on the final year of a DPhil may also apply. Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletNEW FOR 2008-9 The Fountain Court Chambers Scholarship: Through the generosity of Fountain Court Chambers, this scholarship is awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including one year of the DPhil). Available to UK , EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletFreshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Scholarships: awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including final year of DPhil). Administered by the Faculty and available to UK and EU students only.

bulletGraduate Assistance Fund Awards: available annually to assist meritorious students to achieve the level of funding necessary to embark on their chosen course or to complete a graduate degree. Available UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletLinklaters Scholarship: Through the generosity of Linklaters LLP, the Law Board is able to offer a one-year scholarship for the year 2008-9. Available to all students (whether Home, EU or non-EU) studying for the BLC or MJur. Administered by the Faculty

bulletNEW FOR 2008-9 The Peter Birks memorial scholarship: Through the generosity of alumni and of the friends of Peter Birks, this scholarship is awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including final year of DPhil). Available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletThe Roy Goode Scholarship: available annually to new or continuing graduate research students. Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletWinter Williams Studentships: awarded annually to new or continuing graduate students in the Law Faculty, for up to three years.  Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

Further funding for studying for a career at the Bar

bulletEldon Law Scholarship is a two year scholarship awarded annually to students undertaking the Bar Vocational Course prior to entering pupillage in preparation for a career at the Bar.


bulletWho is a home student, who is an EU student, who is an overseas student?

The Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation offers studentships for those undertaking research degrees leading eventually to a doctorate in the field of taxation.

bullet UNIDROIT Scholarship: worth £5,000 per annum, to be held by an existing doctoral student (with suitable research interests). The student is encouraged to spend a period of study at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome, or at some comparable research institute abroad. (This is restricted to those students already holding DPhil status and details of the applications procedure are circulated internally.)

For a student studying for a BCL degree at Trinity College, with preference to someone intending to practise at the Bar of England and Wales. No separate application is required. University College: one Centre for Ethics and Philosophy of Law Studentship awarded annually to those embarking on a one-year research degree, or entering the final year of a DPhil. Only those working on topics in the philosophy of law are eligible. The award is made on the recommendation of the Law Faculty. Candidates applying for Law Faculty Awards listed above are automatically considered. There is no separate application procedure.

bulletArts and Humanities Research Council Awards: the main source of public funding for postgraduate study in the humanities, including law. Extends to taught programmes as well as research degrees. UK-resident students are eligible for full (fees plus  maintenance) awards. Other EU-resident students are eligible for fees-only awards.  Available to new or continuing graduate students. Applications to the AHRC require the Law Faculty's approval.  The Law Faculty will conduct an internal competition to decide which applicants to nominate to the AHRC for an award. Law postgraduate students applying for an AHRC award must submit their AHRC forms to the Law Faculty Office by noon on  4 April 2008. bulletFurther details

bulletClarendon Bursaries: an Oxford University funding programme open to new graduate students in any subject who are liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. Extends to taught programmes as well as research degrees. Apply by completing the funding sections of the graduate admissions form. As part of the admissions process, the Law Faculty will decide which applicants  to nominate to the University for a Clarendon Bursary.

bulletORS Awards: publicly funded scheme open to those liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. Covers the difference between tuition fees at the overseas rate and tuition fees at the home rate. Open to new  research students or those entering the second year of a research degree.  As part of the admissions process, the Law Faculty will decide which applicants to nominate for an ORS award.

bulletRhodes Scholarships: two-year scholarships (renewable for a third year) available to applicants to Oxford from a number of countries around the world.
