There are many sources of funding for postgraduate law studies at Oxford.

Law Faculty awards (for study at any college)

The Faculty is pleased to be able to offer a range of scholarships, some through the generosity of benefactors, others through of the Faculty’s own financial resources. All are listed below, as are college scholarships and scholarships available through other sources such as the AHRC, Clarendon bursaries etc. Clicking on the link for each will bring up further information about the scholarship in question and how to apply.

bulletCommercial Bar Studentships: awarded annually to those embarking on a one-year research degree. Primarily intended for MPhil students, though those intending to take the MSt, or embarking on the final year of a DPhil may also apply. Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletThe Fountain Court Chambers Scholarship: Through the generosity of Fountain Court Chambers, this scholarship is awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including one year of the DPhil). Available to UK , EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletFreshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Scholarships: awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including final year of DPhil). Administered by the Faculty and available to UK and EU students only.

bulletGraduate Assistance Fund Awards: available annually to assist meritorious students to achieve the level of funding necessary to embark on their chosen course or to complete a graduate degree. Available UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletLinklaters Scholarship: Through the generosity of Linklaters LLP, the Law Board is able to offer a one-year scholarship available to all students (whether Home, EU or non-EU) studying for the BCL or MJur. Administered by the Faculty

bulletThe Peter Birks memorial scholarship: Through the generosity of alumni and of the friends of Peter Birks, this scholarship is awarded annually to students embarking on the BCL, MJur or one year research degree (including final year of DPhil). Available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletThe Roy Goode Scholarship: available annually to new or continuing graduate research students. Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

bulletWinter Williams Studentship: awarded annually to new or continuing graduate students in the Law Faculty, for up to three years.  Administered by the Faculty and available to UK, EU, and overseas students alike.

 

Prospective applicants: to apply for awards administered by the faculty, please tick the Departmental Studentship Applications sections on Page 6 (on-line application) or section L (paper application ) of the graduate admissions form and type Law Faculty in the Advertised reference code box for on-line and in the Funding Source for the paper form. You will be considered for all the awards for which you are eligible.

Further funding for studying for a career at the Bar

bulletEldon Law Scholarship is a two year scholarship awarded annually to students undertaking the Bar Vocational Course prior to entering pupillage in preparation for a career at the Bar.


bulletWho is a home student, who is an EU student, who is an overseas student?

The Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation offers studentships for those undertaking research degrees leading eventually to a doctorate in the field of taxation.

bullet UK Foundation for International Uniform Law Scholarship: worth £5,000 per annum, to be held by an existing doctoral student (with suitable research interests). The student is encouraged to spend a period of study at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome, or at some comparable research institute abroad. (This is restricted to those students already holding DPhil status)

Awards for international students

bulletMelbourne BCL Scholarship: an annual scholarship providing £5,000 or more for a Melbourne University Law graduate for the BCL. The scholarship is made possible by the generous gift of Allan Myers AO QC. Additional Myers Scholarships for Melbourne graduates may be awarded for the BCL or for other graduate programmes in Law at Oxford. Application for the Melbourne BCL Scholarship should be made to Melbourne Law School.
No separate application is required for a Myers Scholarship; candidates who have graduated from the University of Melbourne Law School will automatically be considered on the basis of their application.

bulletMagister Juris Scholarships for CUPL studentsThrough the generosity of The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust, two scholarships are available to students applying for the Magister Juris who, by the start of the course, will have graduated from the China University of Political Science and Law

We are very pleased to announce that through the generosity of the David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust, two scholarships, of £7,500 each, will be available to Magister Juris students who are also graduates of China University of Political Science and Law (or will be graduates of that institution by the time they start the Magister Juris). In order to be considered for these scholarships, candidates do not need to do anything other than apply for admission to the Magister Juris by the normal deadline (22 January 2010); those accepted will then be considered automatically and will be notified in early to mid April.

Trinity College: Michael and Judith Beloff Scholarship. £6,500 for 1 year. For a student studying for a BCL degree at Trinity College, with preference to someone intending to practise at the Bar of England and Wales. No separate application is required. University College: one Centre for Ethics and Philosophy of Law Studentship awarded annually to those embarking on a one-year research degree, or entering the final year of a DPhil. Only those working on topics in the philosophy of law are eligible. The award is made on the recommendation of the Law Faculty. Candidates applying for Law Faculty Awards listed above are automatically considered. There is no separate application procedure.

bulletArts and Humanities Research Council Awards: the main source of public funding for postgraduate study in the humanities, including law. Extends to taught programmes as well as research degrees. UK-resident students are eligible for full (fees plus maintenance) awards. Other EU-resident students are eligible for fees-only awards.  Available to new or continuing graduate students. Apply by completing the funding sections of the graduate admissions form. bulletClarendon Bursaries: an Oxford University funding programme open to new graduate students in any subject who are liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. Extends to taught programmes as well as research degrees. Apply by completing the funding sections of the graduate admissions form. As part of the admissions process, the Law Faculty will decide which applicants  to nominate to the University for a Clarendon Bursary.
