The Dark Side of Mobile Communication

Monday 23 November

* The Dark Side of Mobile Communication
Speaker: Naomi Baron
Oxford Internet Institute at 16.00
(organised by Oxford Internet Institute)
Mobile phones have revolutionized contemporary human communication. Users, manufacturers, and telecommunications companies are quick to extol such virtues of the technology as convenient interpersonal connectivity, entertainment during dead time, or a sense of personal security. Yet there is also a darker side to mobiles: user complaints about the devices themselves and, more importantly, about the disadvantages of always being reachable. Drawing upon her cross-cultural research on mobile phones, Naomi Baron discusses conflicting attitudes university students have towards their mobile devices, and then examines the individual and social implications of these conflicts.

The Secular Legacy of the Covenant: How the Franciscans Created the Modern Corporation

Monday 23 November

* The Secular Legacy of the Covenant: How the Franciscans Created the Modern Corporation
Speaker: Michael Black
Taylor Institution, Seminar Room , Oxford at 17.15
(organised by Oxford University)
The corporation has been called the all-embracing economic phenomenon of the 20th century. It is an institution which dominates our lives as the place of our worldly ambitions, aspirations, and activities. Yet its origins are to be found in the rather unworldly religious tradition of worshipful poverty initiated by St. Francis and his followers in the 13th century. Based on a theory of subsistent relation first formulated by Augustine and refined by scholastic theology, the corporation entered Western law through a sequence of legal rulings of serious consequence to the medieval Church as well as to the Franciscans. By creating an entity which had its own identity and interests, which could own but could not be owned, in which possession was distinguished from benefit, these rulings established the corporation as an institution in fact and in law. The modern corporation is unintelligible without an understanding of this background.
