The course will be based on the first two thirds of a book manuscript. Continuing a long tradition, the book argues that facts about what people have a right to, or what obligations they have, or what they are to be blamed for, are to be grounded in facts about human interests. Where the book departs from this tradition is in claiming that the crucial interests here are normative interests, interests in the existence and distribution of rights, obligations, in the appropriateness of blame and so forth.

Topics covered include forgiveness, friendship, promising, consent, blame and obligation, the difference between a wrong and a wronging, between choice and consent, between a promise and an expression of intention. The course is mainly intended for graduate students in philosophy, law and the social sciences but interested undergraduates are welcome.
