The Centre for Criminology has, for over fifty years, acted as the focal point for criminological studies in Oxford, and is an integral department within the Faculty of Law. Until recently the work of the Centre has been largely devoted to research, with its members carrying out an impressive range of projects, funded by the Home Office, the Youth Justice Board, the Legal Services Commission, and a number of charitable foundations. The Centre thus has a reputation as one of the UK’s foremost departments of criminology through the publication of high quality research on a wide range of topics.
The Centre is currently developing a vibrant programme of research in the fields of policing and security; sentencing and punishment; public opinion, politics and crime control; victims; extra-legal governance and organized crime, and crime, rehabilitation and desistance. Its members are committed to connecting criminological work to the broader concerns of the social sciences; to thinking comparatively about crime and punishment; to bringing together sociological and normative approaches to the analysis of crime and justice; and to working at the intersections between criminology and public policy.
The Centre is dedicated to pursuing an innovative programme of criminological research and to delivering high quality graduate education in criminology at both masters and doctoral level. Information about both the Centre’s research, the MSc degrees in Criminology and Criminal Justice, the M Phil in Criminology and doctoral study in the Centre can be found elsewhere on these pages.
The Centre holds regular seminars at Manor Road which all attract distinguished speakers from the international academic community. Details can be found on the centre’s website.
